Biography

Rabbi Moshe Sofer, known as the Chasam Sofer, was the Rabbi of Pressburg and founder of the Pressburg Yeshiva, a central institution for traditional Ashkenazi Orthodoxy in Central Europe. His leadership and piskei halacha were a primary force in formulating the Orthodox response to Reform and Haskalah currents in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His published writings include responsa, chiddushim on Shas, drashos, and commentaries on the Torah and tefillah, many of which appear under the title Chasam Sofer.
