Rabbi Moshe Isserles

Biography

The Rema was a leading halachic authority in Polish Jewry. He authored the Mapah, a gloss on the Shulchan Aruch that integrated Ashkenazi minhagim and the traditions of the Baalei HaTosafos into the codification of Jewish law. This work, which reformatted research from his Darkei Moshe to complement Rabbi Yosef Karo’s Beis Yosef, helped bridge Sephardic and Ashkenazi halachic traditions and contributed to the universal acceptance of the Shulchan Aruch.
