Biography

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Krochmal was the Landesrabbiner of Moravia and author of the responsa collection Tzemach Tzedek. He studied under Rabbi Yoel Sirkes, author of Bayis Chadash, and Rabbi David ben Shmuel ha-Levi (Taz). He led rabbinic circles that included his son-in-law, Rabbi Gershon Ashkenazi, and Rabbi Menachem Mendel Auerbach. He presided over Moravian synods and formulated the Shai Takkanot, regulations governing Moravian Jewish communities until 1848.
