Rabbi Meir Ashkenazi was a Chabad chassid who served as the chief rabbi of Shanghai from 1926 to 1949. He led the community through a period of immense growth, overseeing the spiritual and physical needs of thousands of Jewish refugees who fled to Shanghai during World War II. A central figure in the city's religious life, he established the Ohel Moshe synagogue and arranged for the relocated Mir Yeshiva to be housed in the Beth Aharon Synagogue.
