Biography

Rabbi Rabbi Matisyahu Strashun was a Talmudic scholar, communal leader, and bibliophile in Vilna, and the son of Rabbi Shemuel Strashun (the Rashash). He authored scholarly annotations on the Talmud Bavli, which were included in the Vilna edition of the Talmud, and was known as a Midrashic scholar. He amassed a personal collection of approximately 5,700 volumes, which he bequeathed to the Vilna community to form the basis of the public Strashun Library.
