Biography

Rabbi Manoach Hendel ben Shemaria was a talmid of Rabbi Shlomo Luria (Maharshal) and Rabbi Moshe Isserles (Rema). He served as a Rosh Yeshiva in Lwów and later as the Rav of Vienna. He authored Manoach HaLevavos, the first commentary on Rabbi Bachya ibn Pakuda's ethical work, and Chochmas Manoach, a collection of Talmudic glosses that used geometric and architectural diagrams to explain complex passages. Before his passing, he was a leading figure alongside Rabbi Yehoshua Falk (Sm"a) in the "Get of Vienna" case, concerning an unconditional divorce.
