Biography

Rabbi Joseph Breuer was a communal rabbi and rosh yeshiva who transplanted the German Neo-Orthodox community of his grandfather, Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, to the United States. In New York, he founded and led Congregation K'hal Adath Jeshurun in Washington Heights from 1939 and established its Yeshivah Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch in 1944. These institutions served as the center for the continuation of the Frankfurt "Torah im Derech Eretz" philosophy in America following the Holocaust.
