Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik was a rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva University's Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) and a foundational thinker for 20th-century Modern Orthodoxy. A descendant of the Brisker rabbinic dynasty, he integrated its rigorous method of Talmudic analysis with concepts from Western philosophy. While serving for decades as the senior rosh yeshiva at RIETS and spiritual mentor for generations of American rabbis, he also served as the Rav Av Beis Din for the Jewish community of Boston.
