A talmid of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter and the Netziv, Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin, Rabbi Jacob Joseph was a maggid in Vilna before being appointed in 1888 as the first and only Chief Rabbi of New York City's Association of American Orthodox Hebrew Congregations. His tenure was marked by efforts to establish centralized kashrus supervision, but he faced significant opposition. After his death, the Rabbi Jacob Joseph Yeshiva was named in his memory.
