Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer was a talmid of the Volozhin Yeshiva under Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin and Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik. He led the yeshiva in Slutsk, which later relocated to Kletsk, alongside his son-in-law, Rabbi Aharon Kotler. After immigrating to Mandatory Palestine in 1925, he was appointed Rosh Yeshiva of the Etz Chaim Yeshiva in Jerusalem and served as chairman of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah. His work, Even HaAzel, is an analytical commentary on Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon's Mishneh Torah.
