Rabbi Ephraim HaKohen was a dayan in Buda (Ofen), Hungary, whose life was significantly impacted by the Khmelnytsky Uprising. His responsa collection, Sha'ar Ephraim, contains halachic rulings and firsthand accounts related to the massacres. A descendant of Rabbi Eliyahu Ba'al Shem of Chelm, he was also the maternal grandfather and early teacher of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Ashkenazi, the Chacham Tzvi.
