Rabbi Eliezer Silver was a leading Orthodox communal rabbi and activist in the United States, serving as Rav of Kneseth Israel in Cincinnati and president of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the U.S. and Canada. He played a central role in Holocaust-era rescue through the Vaad Hatzalah and later in founding Agudath Israel of America. He used his rabbinic authority to mobilize American Orthodoxy on behalf of European Jewry and postwar survivors.
