Rabbi Dovid Tzvi Hoffman was a posek and the rector of the Rabbinical Seminary of Berlin, where he succeeded Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer. He authored influential commentaries on the Pentateuch, particularly Das Buch Deuteronomium and a work on Leviticus, which responded to the arguments of biblical criticism from a traditional perspective. As chairman of the beis din for the Adass Jisroel community and head of the seminary, he was a leading authority for German Orthodoxy at the turn of the 20th century.
