Rabbi Dovid Tzvi Hoffmann was a leading halachic authority in Germany. He served as Rosh Yeshiva of the Rabbinical Seminary of Berlin and authored extensive commentaries on the Pentateuch and Mishnah in opposition to biblical criticism. His works include Die wichtigsten Instanzen gegen die Graf-Wellhausensche Hypothese and Die Erste Mishna, a historical and linguistic analysis of the Mishnah.
