Biography

Rabbi David Nieto, a physician, astronomer, and philosopher, was appointed Chacham of London's Spanish and Portuguese community in 1701, serving at the Bevis Marks Synagogue. He opposed the remnants of the Sabbatean movement and defended rabbinic tradition. His primary apologetic work, Mateh Dan (also titled Kuzari Sheni), defends the authority of the Oral Law in a dialogic format reminiscent of Rabbi Yehuda Halevi's Kuzari.
