Rabbi David HaLevi Segal was a leading halachic authority and the primary talmid of Rabbi Yoel Sirkis (the Bach). He authored Turei Zahav, a foundational commentary on the Shulchan Aruch that clarified its reasoning and reconciled it with the Tur. Despite personal tragedies during the Chmielnicki massacres, he served as Rav of Lemberg, and his work remains a central commentary on the Shulchan Aruch.
