Rabbi David HaLevi Segal was a leading Polish posek and communal rabbi, known by the acronym of his major work as the Taz. He authored Turei Zahav, a commentary on the Shulchan Aruch that explains and critiques the rulings of the Mechaber and the Rema, and which is now printed in virtually all standard editions. A talmid of his future father-in-law, Rabbi Yoel Sirkis (the Bach), his work became one of the two foundational Acharon commentaries on the Shulchan Aruch.
