Rabbi Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai, known as the Chida, was a Jerusalem-born posek, mekubal, and itinerant rabbinic emissary (shadar) for the communities of Eretz Yisrael. He is widely known for his bibliographical and biographical encyclopedia Shem HaGedolim, which documents thousands of Torah scholars and their works. A prolific author of over one hundred works in all fields of Torah scholarship, his extensive travels also produced the important 18th-century travel diary Ma'agal Tov.
