Rabbi Chaim ben Betzalel was the older brother of Rabbi Yehuda Loew of Prague and served as Rabbi of Friedberg. He was a halachic authority whose work, Sefer HaChaim, offered a defense of the Rishonim and critiqued the methodology of Rabbi Yosef Karo's Beit Yosef.
