Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer was a German rabbi and a central leader of 19th-century Orthodox Judaism, advocating for a synthesis of traditional Torah learning with secular scholarship. He authored responsa and Talmudic commentaries, but his primary institutional achievement was the establishment of the Rabbinerseminar zu Berlin (the Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary) in 1873. This seminary, which he led as rector, was a pioneering institution that provided its students with both rigorous Talmudic education and university-level academic training, shaping a model of modern Orthodoxy for generations.
