Rabbi Avraham Kalmanowitz was the president of the Mir Yeshiva in Europe and a tireless rescue activist during World War II. He is remembered for his central role in the survival of the Mir Yeshiva, having almost single-handedly funded its escape from Europe and its existence in Shanghai. After the war, he founded and led the Mirrer Yeshiva Central Institute in Brooklyn, re-establishing the European yeshiva in America and serving as its rosh yeshiva until his passing.
