Rabbi Avraham Dov Ber Kahana Shapiro, a descendant of Rabbi Chaim Volozhin, was the Chief Rabbi of Kovno and a leading halachic authority. His multi-volume responsa collection, Devar Avraham, combined rigorous Litvak scholarship with pastoral leadership during a period of upheaval in Eastern European Jewry. His responsa addressed practical questions of religious observance and remain a significant record of halachic reasoning in the early twentieth century.
