Rabbi Akiva Yosef Schlesinger was a Hungarian rabbi and a forceful early advocate for both Jewish nationalism and ultra-Orthodoxy. He authored Lev HaIvri, a work sharply criticizing the religious reform and secularizing trends emerging in European Jewry. After immigrating to Jerusalem in 1870, he founded societies dedicated to the agricultural settlement of the Land of Israel, including the organization Machzirei Atara LeYoshna.
